Welcome to GrapeSEED

For over 50 years we at GrapeSEED have been invested in a singular mission: the success of the next generation. We exist to give parents hope for a better life for their children and teachers the tools they need to be successful.

GrapeSEED Learning Outcomes

1. ABILITY TO LISTEN, COMPREHEND, AND RESPOND

GrapeSEED students actively engage in a variety of oral language experiences to gain an increasing level of comprehension and aural skills.

Students are expected to:

  • Distringuish and produce certain Standard English sounds, words, and greetings.
  • Infer meaning by associating words with actions and pictures.
  • Listen for different purposes (functions) such as to get information, solve problems, enjoy, and appreciate.
  • Understand information given or questions asked by others.

2. ABILITY TO SPEAK CLEARLY

GrapeSEED students speak to different audiences using developmental vocabulary with increasing fluency and accuracy.

Students are expected to:

  • Engage in activities that demonstrate communication and language acquisition skills.
  • Initiate conversation by employing newly acquired vocabulary and concepts (notions).
  • Choose and adapt spoken language appropriate to the audience, purpose, and occasion.
  • Gain increasing accuracy and appropriate word choice when speaking.

3. ABILITY TO READ AND UNDERSTAND

GrapeSEED students demonstrate phonemic awareness and vocabulary development. They learn to comprehend and ask questions about selections read aloud.

Students are expected to:

  • Develop vocabulary through meaningful exercises and concrete experiences.
  • Develop vocabulary by discussing selections that are read aloud.
  • Use knowledge of phonics to decode familiar English words.
  • Read and understand almost all English words in their receptive vocabulary.

4. WRITING READINESS

GrapeSEED students develop the foundations of writing.

Students are expected to:

  • Learn to air write letters and numbers.
  • Write each letter of the alphabet and demonstrate increasing control of penmanship.
  • Write sentences dictated by the teacher.
  • Revise and edit their own writing to make ideas clearer and more precise.

We intentionally apply the scientific research on practice and repetition. Repetition gives children a sense of familiarity and confidence. We have all seen students ask for a story or song over and over again!

Behold the power of music, as these fun and engaging short songs with illustrations are used to teach vocabulary, language functions, and pronunciation. Combined with pictures and natural gestures, songs increase understanding of new language concepts.

Shared reading teaches phoneme and phonogram awareness. Big books foster awareness of phonics principles, proper pronunciation, and natural expression, while also teaching high frequency words.

CHANTS

Chants enable children to learn both what to say (the right words) and how to say it (the right voice inflection). They provide a fun, natural context for learning most language functions. Chants focus on asking and answering questions.

Daily repetition with comprehension over an extended period of time is a key part of the language acquisition process - stories give this opportunity. Stories expand students’ English vocabulary and language functions with different types of sentence structures.

VOCABULARY PICTURE CARDS

Bring words to life with over 1,200 cards.  Students connect cartoon illustrations with vocabulary words, making it easy and fun to learn nouns, verbs and opposites. Teachers can a;sp make quick assessments of student progress on pronunciation and intonation.

PHONOGRAM CARDS

Students learn the sounds of the English language and how they come together to make words - the foundation for reading. Air writing helps students learn the stroke order, name, and sound of each letter.

STORY DICTIONARIES

Reading stories engages students in discussion, which builds their ability to communicate and improves confidence. Each Unit includes a story dictionary which reinforces the vocabulary words and language functions learned in the previous Unit.

Shared reading teaches phoneme and phonogram awareness. Poems teach the students to recognize a specific sound at the beginning, middle and end of words.
